RECOGNIZING: __ Visible at installation: _____________

 CHECK    Latent/Time: ___________________

LOCATION: In traffic lanes and pivot points. Doorways, in Front of furniture, around the beds, in font of the vanity, stairs. landings, hallways, and entry ways to the kitchen.
DEFINITION/
APPEARANCE:
The collapsing of the pile yarns, under use, so that the carpet looses most of it's resilience. Matting is entanglement of fibers.

PREVENTION: Sell carpets with an excellent twist level to the yarn bundle.Upgrade your customers into carpets that have no matting or crushing warranties. Sell the best pad. Encourage the use of walk off mats. Qualify and caution your customer about "high expectations" as this is a textile product. Because of different fiber characteristics, the sales person must understand that carpets made of nylon yarn will have more resiliency against crushing than those
carpets of olefin yarn. It does need to be properly vacuumed and maintained.

  • TEST INSPECT
CHECKPull tufts                             __No Manufacturing __     Defect

CHECKProvide a 3"x7" swatch of unused carpet with your inspection report for testing.

CHECKOther: Check for soil using a dry and then a wet, white cloth. Pour a tablespoon of water on the carpet's pile, then agitate it into the pile yarn.
Does this produce suds or a sticky residue from cleaning chemicals that were not rinsed out during cleaning? Check yarn bundle encapsulation, saturation, and penetration. Although there is no industry standard, the accepted minimum is 75% for cut pile construction and 60% for a heavy loop pile (bulky. berber type) construction. Holding the point of the tuft in your forefinger and thumb, try to pull filaments out of the tips of the tufts (this is called filament slippage).  Is this excessive? Another test is to vigorously rub a quarter across the pile surface ten (10) times. Is the Fuzzing or filament slippage excessive? If there is filament slippage, remember the yarn bundle wrap may be good, however, it is possible that the latex mix was improper or poorly cured, thus preventing the latex from adequately penetrating: the yarn bundle and attaching itself to every filament of yarn.

  • HOW TO RESOLVE
Matting
Crushing
If the yarn bundle encapsulation, saturation, and penetration is less than 60% for a cut pile or 50% on a for a heavy, loop pile, the generally accepted standards, filaments will slip from the yarn bundle and allow the poor appearance to accelerate. If the matting is the result of soiling or cleaning residues, then a qualified professional carpet cleaner can improve the carpet appearance and performance at the consumers expense. Because nylon fiber carpets will absorb up to 4% of it's body weight in moisture, they will respond to a hot water extraction cleaning and tend to "fluff up" more. While all carpet fibers will definitely perform better when clean and free of soil and other residues, one should not expect carpets of olefin yarn to bounce back. These fibers have little or no memory and
displays an only "fair" resilience. It should be noted that many times the carpet is performing up to the characteristics and standards of it's design and just because the carpet looks bad does not mean it's defective. The customer just has high expectations for a textile product, or the carpet was over sold!
